Another successful Cultural Food Evening 21 October 2016
WRAP UP - TERM 3 2012
Nga mihi nui kia koutou,
My how time flies when you’re having fun! It’s hard to believe we only have 1 more week to go until the end of Term. It seems that each term is getting busier and busier. Some of the highlights from this term have included:
The House Captain & Nikau team olympics, Mathswell competitions, Te Papa and Maritime Museum trips, successful UNSW competition results, Netball tournaments, Staff/student netball challenge, Bluelight stage challenge, Odd Shoe Day, fabulous student learning celebrations, stacks of amazing learning happening in classrooms, and I am looking forward to the Year 7/8 Film Festival next week.
I was thrilled to get to the Artsplash concert last week and see our Maungaraki Choir contribute to what was an incredible night’s entertainment. Our children performed with great enthusiasm and were a credit to us all. Huge thanks to Mrs Coyle, Mrs Jackson & Mrs Sutherland who have given up so much of their time to prepare the choir for their night to remember.
Looking ahead to Term 4 there are many things happening to keep us busy... alongside the usual end of year assessments and reports that teachers will be busy with, we are also looking forward to a visit from the Education Review Office in Week 6 and we have lots of exciting things planned for our learners:
~ Battle of The Bands
~ Rhythm Interactive drumming group will be performing
~ Athletics days
~ Totara team camp
~ Nikau team Marae Noho
~ Market Day (to celebrate the culmination of our Inquiry learning this year)
... and all the usual end of year events such as our Eastbourne family fun day, Year 8 Leavers dinner and final assemblies. Check out the attached calendar so that you can get all the important dates into your diary!
Naku noa,
Lisa Cavanagh, Principal.www.maungaraki.school.nz/newsletters.html
Well done team!

Supporting the VSA
Dear Maungaraki community,
The Maungaraki School Enviro team has started the VSA Friendship bracelet program. Casey, Miah, Jahnvi and Amelia will be selling friendship bracelets for $3 outside the mural every day after school until all of them have been sold. All of the money will go to the VSA (Volunteers services abroad.) VSA will donate it to all the poor countries like Bali, Fiji, Somalia and many more! It is a really good cause. Please help out by buying 1 or as many of these bracelets as you like! It would be much appreciated.
Kind Regards,
The Maungaraki School E Team. :)
REFLECTIONS AND FORWARD FOCUS
Nga mihi nui kia koutou,
We have also continued to see amazing sporting successes already this year; with significant results at zone and regional events in swimming and senior athletics.
Teachers have set the foundation for the year beautifully with some inspirational learning around what makes us all special and unique through the “Bright Sparks” and “Leadership” units. I canʼt wait to see how this translates into our Term 2 unit; “Bright Ideas” as we build towards a focus on Science and Technology fairs.
We will be kicking off Term 2 with an ANZAC service supported by the Lower Hutt RSA. This will be held on Tuesday 24th. We are hoping to have poppies available for children to buy on the day, or you may wish to buy your own on Poppy Day (the last Friday of the holidays).
Finally - We hope you enjoy the photos from our Multicoloured Mayhem day today! Thanks to all those who got into the spirit and brought along a gold coin for the Autism Awareness Appeal. We made a grand total of $251.00!
We wish you all a happy Easter and an enjoyable term break. We look forward to seeing all the children back, rested and relaxed on the 23rd April - Stay safe!
Naku noa,
Lisa Cavanagh, Principal.
COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
Thank you to all the friends and family that came along to the Wine and Cheese on Friday night. It was great to
see many of you again and to catch up on news and views. I would like to thank the Home and School group for
providing this opportunity. It is great to have such an active Home and School group who are dedicated to not
only their fundraising efforts, but also to providing social events that help to bring our community together.
At the Wine and Cheese, I passed on my thanks to all those parents who have given up their time to enable our children to participate in the many sporting and educational opportunities ʻOutside the Classroomʼ that we wouldnʼt be able to take part in without this extra help. Later in the newsletter is a request for your assistance in our Term 2 electives. Last year we were able to offer 22 different activities for children to take part in over this time. It would be wonderful if we could again offer a huge range of options... please consider what you may be able to offer and contact Janet Evans at school if you think you can help.
I also got a chance to ʻcheck out the actionʼ at the St Patricks Day disco on Friday night. I loved the effort many went to in dressing up in theme. Getting into the spirit of these events really helps children to develop a sense of citizenship and belonging... Iʼm looking forward to seeing what sort of creations children will come up with during our “Multicoloured Mayhem” day in two weeks time!

Nga mihi nui kia koutou,
I’M PROUD OF OUR SCHOOL!
There have been many occasions over the past two weeks when I have been extremely proud to be a member of the
Maungaraki School family:
~ 2 weeks ago our entire Year 7/8 team showed resilience and perseverance in following through with their Leadership
Camp despite shocking weather and illness. Our students maintained a positive attitude through all the changes (and some disappointments) and were able to make the most of improvised opportunities for them to practice skills of leadership and teamwork. More photos of the camp and some of the messages from our visiting speakers have been posted on my blog.
~ Last Friday, 2 teams of students (Year 5/6 & Year 7/8) represented the school at a Touch Rugby tournament down at Petone Rec. These teams came together with only a few practices, but showed determination and a competitive spirit in all their games. I was thrilled to hear that Maungaraki School players were singled out and recognised at this tournament for their sportsmanship, manners, behaviour and fantastic attitudes. Tino Pai Rawa Atu!
~ Yesterday I was privileged to join Nikau Team at the Fonterra Science and Technology Roadshow down at Hutt Intermediate. I was flabergasted by the depth of knowledge our Year 4, 5 & 6 students had in relation to the scientific principles discussed during the show, and even more proud of the critical thinking and questioning I heard from students as they moved around the interactive displays. This was learning in action and Maungaraki students were 100% engaged!
Thank you so much to all those parents who helped to make these extra curricular events possible for our students. We could not offer these opportunities without you. We are fortunate to have your support.
~ Finally, we have had a great response to the strategic consultation. 33 families have returned the forms and they are full of positive feedback and constructive ideas. We now have the exciting job of making sense of the diversity of responses, identifying patterns and trends, and formulating this into strategic goals for the future. The BOT & Staff will be working on this in the coming weeks and we expect to be able to share this with you for your final feedback at a meeting early in Term 2.
Naku noa,
Lisa Cavanagh, Principal.
Japanese Cooking Night
A lot of fun was had by all. Home and School team were so well prepared - with participants even getting to roll their own sushi which tasted delicious! Other items that were made included teriyaki chicken; miso soup and rolled omelette! Thanks to Home and School for a most enlightening evening of fun, laughter and good food. Check out the photos in the newsletter 8 March 2012! http://www.maungaraki.school.nz/newsletters.html
